Stories of Martinsburg with Chuck and Yvonne

2021-03-27T20:46:48-04:00

Poolesville Seniors was so pleased to welcome back Pastor Chuck Copeland to share stories of the voices and artifacts of historic Martinsburg. What we didn’t expect was to be treated to his own mom – Yvonne (Thompson) Copeland – helping him bring it all to life with her vivid recollections of growing up in our area during the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Through a series of slides, sprinkled with sparkling commentary by both […]

We Enjoyed March Book Club!

2021-03-27T20:33:25-04:00

Thanks to Michelle Roche for leading the lively and thoughtful discussion of our March PS Book Club selection, Praying for Sheetrock by Melissa Fay Greene. This was a particularly powerful work of nonfiction about social injustice and racial prejudice in a small southern community in the latter half of the last century. During the hour-long discussion, several of the attendees were able to bring stories of discrimination and prejudice from their personal experience into […]

Pickleball Players Survey

2021-03-27T20:23:31-04:00

With a view toward optimism, Poolesville Seniors is hoping to, once again, sponsor indoor pickleball. Many of you have grown accustomed to outdoor play and have expressed an interest in continuing that. However, there are some months in the year when outdoor play is not feasible or quite as enjoyable, like 100-degree days or three inches of snow. With this in mind, we are interested in your feedback concerning the rental and availability of our […]

WUMCO Women Part I

2021-03-25T23:18:47-04:00

As we continue our celebration of women in local history, Poolesville Seniors is offering a two– part story about the two women who co-founded a local benchmark institution and spent their lives in service to our community. Jane Stearns’ name is still instantly recognizable and much beloved in connection with WUMCO Help, Inc. Forty-five years after her death, Beulah Harper may be less well known, […]

Poolesville Seniors In the Times of Covid

2021-04-05T14:49:31-04:00

An Open Letter from our President:

Little more than a year ago, Poolesville Seniors had just added popular Bridge classes to our roster of activities. A fully booked Cherry Blossom Cruise was approaching fast. Movie and pickleball attendance were both up. A pre-summer baseball–themed social loomed large.

Then, bam, the Covid pandemic struck, and everything came to a screeching halt.

What would Poolesville Seniors do? We […]

Poolesville Then and Now

2021-03-21T21:28:19-04:00

Kenny Sholes’s “Then and Now” photos of “downtown” Poolesville were awesome! Those who attended his presentation on Thursday were engaged and several added their remembrances and knowledge of the town’s past streetscapes.

Did you know that the site of the Calleva store and office was the home of Hoskinson’s General Merchandise Store in 1876 and that the 1923 fire which started inside destroyed the entire business section […]
