St. Lucia Day

2021-12-12T15:46:24-05:00

St. Lucia’s (St. Lucy) Day is a festival of lights, celebrated widely in Scandinavia and Italy. It signifies the beginning of the Christmas season on December 13th. St Lucia, whose name means light, was a young girl  martyred in 304 A.D. under the Christian persecution orders of the Roman Emperor Diocletian.

Travel writer Rick Steves writes, “the Scandinavian version of the legend is that a young woman born of rich and noble parents – dressed in a white gown with a red sash and wearing […]

Celebrating the 230th Anniversary of the Bill of Rights

2021-12-12T15:41:26-05:00

Many of the rights and liberties Americans cherish—such as freedom of speech, religion, and due process of law—were not enumerated in the original Constitution drafted at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, but were included in the first ten amendments, known as the Bill of Rights.

In 1941 U.S President Franklin D. Roosevelt established Bill of Rights Day, the annual observance of the ratification of the first ten Amendments to our Constitution on December 15, 1791. This year we celebrate the 230th Anniversary.

2021-12-12T15:31:30-05:00

By I.J. Hudson

I apologize in advance.  This is a little technical, but a better understanding of how your camera works makes for better pictures.

What your camera captures depends on settings for Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO, not to mention lens, lighting, motion. and a host of things.   Control what you can.

Aperture is the size of the opening in the lens to let in light.  The smaller the number, the wider […]

Rally For Rangers! (Recap)

2021-12-12T21:49:01-05:00

We are very grateful to Tom Medema, co-founder of Rally for Rangers for bringing us a wonderful presentation on their organization. This worthy 501(c)3 organization is a project of Mongol Ecology Center (MEC) based in Tucson, Arizona, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Rally for Rangers was formed in 2014, after former NPS Ranger Bob McIntosh volunteered at the Lake Hovsgol National Park near the Russian border in Mongolia and realized the great need. He vowed to personally buy a new motorcycle and deliver it […]

Geminids Meteor Shower

2021-12-05T23:12:37-05:00

The best shooting star show of this year runs from Dec. 4 to 17. The Geminids Meteor Shower will produce anywhere from 50 to 120 multicolored meteors an hour at its peak from 9:30 pm to dawn on December 13th.

The Geminids meteors radiate from near the bright stars Castor and Pollux in the constellation Gemini. Some of these spectacular shows may be blocked at the peak by a waxing gibbous moon, but the meteor shower will be so prolific and bright that you […]
