A Letter of Thanks to Bassett’s Restaurant

2021-12-25T10:10:12-05:00

Thank you, Bassett’s!

On behalf of Poolesville Seniors, we would like to let everyone in the Poolesville community know how supportive Bassett’s has been and how much we will deeply miss them.

Eric and Jeff, since you took over Bassett’s in 2018, we have enjoyed a rich and fulfilling relationship with you as esteemed partners in the support of seniors, our most vulnerable population.

We appreciated your many gifts to us. Whether it was catering for our annual February Heart and Soul Gala, providing gift cards, hosting Poolesville […]

History of Christmas

2021-12-19T18:40:49-05:00

Centuries before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Christianity, many countries and cultures celebrated the promise of light and rebirth that would follow the Winter Solstice.

The end of December was a perfect time for a celebration in most areas of Europe. Most cattle were slaughtered before they had to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. Most wine and beer made during the year was fermented and ready for drinking.

In the […]

Boxing Day

2021-12-19T18:22:17-05:00

Boxing Day, celebrated the day after Christmas on December 26th, is a centuries-old public holiday and gift-giving day that originated in Britain. Most offices are closed on this day in Commonwealth countries.

Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and fun. Because it is traditionally the cook’s day off, the menu, usually includes left-over turkey from Christmas.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the custom arose because servants, who had to serve their masters on Christmas Day, […]

Historic Explorations in 2022

2021-12-19T18:22:55-05:00

Poolesville Seniors wants to give special thanks to Kenny Sholes for the generous gift of his time and his always enthralling historical research and interpretation of the history of the Ag Reserve. Kenny’s was the very first Zoom event that Poolesville Seniors presented almost a year and a half ago and it has drawn a large audience on the 3rd Thursday of the month ever since.

Kenny has helped us understand the history of the homes and families who built and lived in them. He has brought many friends and followers to these […]

Joyous Kwanzaa!

2021-12-19T18:15:31-05:00

Kwanzaa, an annual holiday that begins on December 26 and lasts through January 1, is a relatively new creation, though it has its roots in the traditions of community and cultural spirit of the African harvest festivals going back generations. The name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits”.

Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, and families who celebrate it often celebrate it in addition to Christmas, Hanukkah, or another religious holiday.

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 as […]

Winter Solstice

2021-12-19T18:01:34-05:00

Celebrating the Winter Solstice – Fa La La La La La!

As the Earth ‘s poles reach the maximum tilt away from the sun, we experience the winter (hibernal) solstice. This happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). Although the winter solstice itself lasts only a moment, the term sometimes refers to the day on which it occurs.  At the winter solstice, the sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky and the date is […]

Festivus for the Rest of Us!

2021-12-19T18:01:26-05:00

Many of you are familiar with the Seinfeld episode “Strike” in which the Costanza family initiates Jerry, Kramer, and Elaine into the traditions of Festivus. So, is Festivus really a “thing”?

As depicted in the Seinfeld episode, Festivus is celebrated on December 23rd as an alternative to the often pressure filled, commercialized, and hectic winter holidays we celebrate. The celebration includes a Festivus dinner, meatloaf; an unadorned aluminum Festivus pole; practices such as the “airing […]
