All year, nature enthusiasts across the state eagerly await the arrival of the Sunflowers! Have you seen them yet? It’s about that time again and the sunflowers are approaching full bloom. The 2,000 acre McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area off River Rd. south of Poolesville, has over 34 acres of sunflowers in four fields which rotate yearly. Their purpose is to attract and feed over 245 species of birds, especially mourning doves, native bees and pollinators.
Visiting the sunflower fields is a little different from other gardens you may have visited. To make sure you’re prepared for the best possible visit check out these tips for a successful visit:
- McKee-Beshers WMA has no bathroom facilities, no benches and no picnic tables. Please plan accordingly.
- Do Not leave litter of any kind behind.
- The secondary roads are rough, narrow, and gravel so please drive slowly and carefully.
- McKee-Beshers WMA is home to ticks, mosquitoes and poison ivy. Long pants, insect repellent, and shoes are recommended.
- Please note that trails are unmanicured dirt or gravel that can be rough or muddy and may be unsuitable for strollers and for those needing assistance with walking.
These flowers are a Poolesville favorite for scenery and photographs, make sure to enjoy these beauties while they’re in bloom.
