Ride with us on the Long Island Line! Recap

2021-09-05T15:17:27-04:00

If you ever wanted to be master of a universe, you need to watch the recording of Brian Sheron and his amazing HO universe representing the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). He oversees this technical operation with a sophisticated digital command control.

The setup is HO scale or 1/87th actual size. HO stands for Half O scale or 1/48th actual size. It is complete with 40+ flashing signs, over 2,000 figures, 800 vehicles, and multitudes of buildings representing some actual New York businesses and others facetiously named for friends and family. He modeled Jill’s Music Store, Bill’s Catfish Emporium, the New Rattitude Dog Rescue (with a dog catcher waiting outside), and his father’s Huntington marina. The attention to detail and […]

Get Your Shade for Free!

2021-09-05T13:44:26-04:00

It may be hard to believe but planting even one tree can improve the environment around your home and of the community.  Did you know that a tree is a natural air conditioner?  The evaporation from a single tree can produce the cooling effect of ten room-size, residential air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.  A tree canopy in a neighborhood can lower summer temperatures in a neighborhood by 6 to 8 degrees.  Tree windbreaks can reduce residential heating costs 10 to 15% while the shading can […]

The History of Labor Day

2021-09-05T22:50:50-04:00

Written By Cheryl Watts

In the U.S., Labor Day has become a symbol for the end of summer. For some it is a long weekend, an opportunity to enjoy a mini holiday and the last days of summer, a weekend of picnics, swimming and the sight and smell of barbeque smoke in the air.

On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the law making the first Monday of September a national Labor Day holiday, thus allowing workers to enjoy a long weekend, known as Labor Day Weekend.

Throughout […]

Forest Bathing

2021-09-05T13:34:24-04:00

Shinrin-Yoku

If you have ever experienced the forest in a mindful way, you were practicing the Japanese art of Shinrin-Yoku or “forest bathing”. Forest bathing relaxes your mind and body and allows you to connect with nature through all your senses. When you lose yourself in the beauty of your surroundings and leave everyday stress behind, you may reach a place of greater calm and wellness.

Though this forest therapy has been noted for centuries, in 1982 the Japanese Forestry Agency formally coined “Shinrin-Yoku” and marketed the beneficial effects of forest immersion.

The world’s foremost expert in forest medicine, Dr. Qing Li, reports […]

National Preparedness Month

2021-09-05T13:25:30-04:00

With droughts, wildfires, and increasingly violent storms becoming more frequent. It is more important than ever to observe National Preparedness Month this September. These weather events are even impacting people who don’t usually experience a major disaster. Other communities are going through the devastation of disasters multiple times a year without enough time to recover. Established by FEMA in 2004, the purpose of this month is to reduce the fallout of large-scale emergencies by educating and preparing every citizen of every age.

Help keep your family safe during disasters by taking three simple […]
