Happy Chanukah

2021-11-21T19:02:27-05:00

Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers, and fried foods. This year, Chanukah begins on Sunday November 28th and continues through Monday December 6th.

Historic Black Communities of the Ag Reserve

2021-11-21T18:52:34-05:00

Kenny followed the progress made from the 1870s with the founding of Black communities in the areas of Big Woods, Martinsburg, Boyds, Jerusalem, Jonesville, and Sugarland, the building of churches and small schools and the 1956 integration of the Poolesville combined school.

Kenny highlighted the need for ‘Fair Access’ in […]

On the following day, a caisson transported the unknown soldier to Arlington National Cemetery. During the procession, the casket was escorted by members of the military, President and Mrs. Warren […]

Celebrating Community FarmShare

2021-11-21T02:14:39-05:00

Congratulations to Community FarmShare on the success of their first year. The non-profit’s director, Jennifer Freeman envisioned it as “an “Agri – Culture of Caring,” a place where growers and eaters, those with resources and those with fewer resources, can support one another, come to know each other, build bridges, and develop relationships.”

The Poolesville-based initiative connects food insecure families in our communities with local produce farmers. Supporters donate toward farm shares from local farmers (supporting our local table-food farming community). The weekly share of fresh produce […]

Native American Heritage Month

2021-11-21T02:12:23-05:00

November’s Native American Heritage Month began at the turn of the 20th Century as a day of recognition for the contributions of Native Americans to the growth and establishment of the United States. In the early 1900’s, Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a “First Americans’ Day”, which they did for three years. On September 28, 1915, the Congress of the American Indian Association and its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, declared the second Saturday of May as American […]
