As you notice Christmas decorations popping up around Thanksgiving, you should either thank or curse Macy’s department store.  Founder Rowland Hussey Macy was noted for his innovative marketing that included in-store Santas.

In 1924, Macy’s had just completed a huge expansion of the flagship Manhattan store, enlarging it to one million square feet and a full block on 34th street. The Macy’s staff assembled a parade on Thanksgiving Day with […]

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, during the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each year. The first Thanksgiving meal […]

Bill Clinton designated November 15th as America Recycles Day by Presidential Proclamation in 1999. Almost every president since then has issued a similar proclamation and encouraged Americans to commit to recycling.

In 2009, this effort became a part of the Make America Beautiful Campaign to raise awareness about recycling correctly all year long. The EPA estimates that recycling has increased from 7% in 1960 to the current rate of 32%. […]

For the holidays each year, Wreaths Across America (“WAA”) coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies to “Remember, Honor, and Teach” about the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families. This tradition began in 1992 as The Arlington Wreath project and started with the laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery by Morrill Worcester.

WAA remained relatively obscure until 2005 when a photo of the snow-covered gravestones adorned with wreaths went […]

Have you noticed the Little Free Pantry in Poolesville? It is intended as an occasional resource to supplement other food security programs like those of WUMCO-Help and Community Farmshare. It also assists those who only have an occasional need. Located in front of the Presbyterian Church, and refilled by townspeople and church members, the Little Free Pantry provides yet another way to fill the gap in food security for all area residents […]

November’s Native American Heritage Month began at the turn of the 20th Century as a day of recognition for the contributions of Native Americans to the growth and establishment of the United States. In the early 1900’s, Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a “First Americans’ Day”, which they did for three years. On September 28, 1915, the Congress of the […]

Veterans Day is observed on November 11 in commemoration of the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between the Allies and Germany, declaring a cessation of WWI hostilities on the western front effective at the 11th hour (am) of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

The official end of WWI came on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Due to the objections of the […]
