From July 28th through August 1st Poolesville Seniors Pickleball players were helping to represent Maryland at the 2025 National Senior Games (Senior Olympics). Ten of the Poolesville Seniors players who qualified for the bi-annual National Games last year traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to compete.
Poolesville Seniors Pickleball was represented by George Coakley, John Cotton, John Dansby, Jerry Greaney, Gwen Haney, Maggie & Dave Newcomer, Marge Martin, Brian Peper and Norm Spencer and a great cheering section of family and friends. Sixteen hundred pickleball players from around the nation were registered for the pickleball competition.
The players competed according to age groups and skill levels with the following results:
Gold Medalists: Brian Peper and Gwen Haney in Mixed Doubles 70-74/3.0
Silver Medalists: Norm Spencer in Singles 80-84/3.0
Bronze Medalists: Brian Peper and Jerry Greaney in Doubles 70-74/3.0
Fourth Place: George Coakley in Singles 80-84/3.5
Fifth Place: John Dansby and Norm Spencer in Doubles 80-84/3.5
Tenth Place: George Coakley and John Cotton in Doubles 80-84/3.5
Maggie and Dave Newcomer gave the competition their all but did not place this year in their events. Maggie also competed with Marge Martin from outside the Poolesville area, winning their first match and playing hard fought games.
Poolesville Seniors activities continue to draw participants from the surrounding area, with 6 of the players traveling to Des Moines living outside of the Poolesville town limits. This participation shows the viability of a future Recreational Center in Poolesville.
