We are grateful to Mary Ann Jung for her delightful History Alive presentation: Amelia Earhart- The Fun of It. Mary Ann, as “Millie”, recalled growing up in rural Kansas in the 1890s, independent, headstrong, and slightly reckless. During WWI while volunteering at a Canadian Military Hospital, Amelia heard stories from fliers and was hooked for life. She went on to have harrowing adventures of her own, setting flight records for first pilot and first female pilot with comparatively primitive equipment. During her attempt to circumlocute the globe with navigator Fred Noonan, their sophisticated communications system was a bamboo fishing pole, string, note cards, and a paper clip.
On June 2, 1937, Earhart and Noonan lost contact with their radio contact vessel, the Coast Guard cutter ITASKA, precipitating one of the most extensive searches in history. Their disappearance remains one of the great unsolved mysteries.
