The John Poole House, the oldest building in Poolesville, was built by John Poole, Jr. In 1793. The building served as a trading post for traveling merchants and local families. In 1810 it housed Poolesville's first U.S. Post Office.
The frame portion of the building was added in 1866 and now serves as the Historic Medley District's office which owns and preserved this historic building as well as the Old Bank Building and Museum and the Seneca Schoolhouse. The museum shop is furnished based on authentic period antiques, and features collectibles, pottery, toys, local books and art.
The E. L. Stock, Jr. Memorial Arboretum is located at the rear of the John Poole House and Store Museum. Surrounding the log and frame cottage is a collection of trees, bushes, herbs, and perennials indigenous to western Montgomery County before 1850.
The Historic Medley District will open the John Poole House to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on October 11th, 18th, 25th. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to investigate this piece of Poolesville history firsthand! Watch for the HMD Ghost Tours on 10/24 and 10/25.

How intriguing? Our town was globally famous during the Civil War. Do you know why? Poolesville had a pivotal role in Union troops winning at Gettysburg and consequently the war. Do you know why? Ole' Abe Lincoln had a strong connection to Poolesville. Do you know when? Find out the answers to all this as a docent and have a lot of fun sharing this and very much more history with the public.
If HMD can get just five adults to dedicate themselves to docent just one Saturday or Sunday a month, we can be open every weekend from May to October.
