The Fourth of July is just a few days away and many of us are looking forward to a spectacular fireworks display. Since they can be so dangerous, fireworks are best left to the professionals who know how to handle them safely.
Each year, fireworks in the United States cause approximately twelve deaths, 2000 serious eye injuries, and 5000 other injuries (including amputated fingers).
In Montgomery County, ALL fireworks are illegal to possess or discharge, including gold label sparklers, snap-and-pop noise makers, and snakes.
The explosive in fireworks is usually made up of tightly packed, coarse explosive gunpowder (also known as black powder). Fireworks are explosions of numerous small pellets of black powder called stars. In addition to black powder, firework stars contain different chemicals or metals to create certain colors. The main ingredients in fireworks are an oxygen-rich chemical (known as an oxidizer, like potassium nitrate) and a fuel to burn (sulfur and charcoal are often used).
Firecrackers are fireworks designed to produce sound rather than light, and they're often incorporated into the upper effects of rockets.
Essentially fireworks are explosive rockets so children should never touch them. Even sparkler fireworks are potentially dangerous, especially for young children. They burn at about 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt some metals, and can cause severe burns to the face, hands, and feet.
Do the safer thing and enjoy a fantastic fireworks display sponsored by the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department, along with a variety of food and specialty-item vendors.
Revenue from parking goes directly back into the 4th of July Fireworks expense fund. Please have $10 in cash ready for the attendant when asked. Please do not park along Hughes Road.
No alcohol, pets, or open flames are allowed.
