Shuggie Bain, the Booker Prize winning, debut novel by Scottish American author and fashion designer Douglas Stuart, is a master work in historical fiction that encompasses some of the author’s own experiences in the writing.
The novel, set in in Glasgow, Scotland, explores the landscape of 1980s post-industrial Scotland. Sixteen-year-old Hugh “Shuggie” Bain and his dysfunctional family life exemplify the struggles of the working class in Margaret Thatcher’s England. Despite the desperation of the time, this novel is ultimately a “love story” in which the reader can discover and understand the love, the hope, and the humanity of the characters.
