“If you eat, you’re in.” That is the motto for the Poolesville Community Garden. Congratulate them on the Seventh Anniversary of the grand opening of this volunteer project. It was created through the efforts of Poolesville Presbyterian Church, aided by Poolesville Green, and the Town of Poolesville and envisioned as a place to healthfully nourish stomachs, and souls in a calming environment. This former vacant lot owned by and adjacent to the church on Route 109 has been transformed, with the help of a cadre of volunteer gardeners, carpenters, and administrators, into an attractive, inviting, raised-bed, food-producing site, and space for reflection.

If your yard doesn’t have the sun or space to grow your own or you want to experience the camaraderie of fellow gardeners, stroll through garden to admire the raised beds, then consider signing up for the next available plot. Check out their Facebook page for gardening tips and information. You can contact then at poolesvillecommunitygarden@gmail.com.

A nominal annual rental fee per garden box is collected to help with the annual upkeep of the garden boxes, pay ongoing operating expenses (i.e., water bill, cover crop seed, gardening supplies) and pay for maintenance on the raised beds and surrounding native plantings and trees. The amount collected is supplemented with donations and fundraising income. The entire community is invited to be a part of this project which continues to expand. The latest endeavor is a Poolesville Community Seed Library.

If the garden inspires you to start your own raised bed garden, be sure to register for the Poolesville Seniors’ event The Joys of Raised Bed Gardening on May 13 at 7pm. Sarah Defnet, manager of the Poolesville Community Garden, will share her considerable experience in this interesting and informative virtual presentation. Register here.
