Rev. Chuck Copeland will continue his discussion about the free black community of Martinsburg. We will hear about the monumental life change faced by former slaves whose lives had not been their own. We’ll follow their efforts to build and secure a “new” society after Emancipation, and the vital role of the Methodist Church and schools in building an individual identity, sense of self and community. There will be a question-and-answer session following.
Chuck Copeland has lived in Dickerson since 1993. This descendent of former slaves will be sharing with us the history of Martinsburg, formerly a part of a larger freed black community.
