In 2015, Montgomery County joined the World Health Organization/ AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. There are over 880 US communities in this program as well as more than 50 in other countries. The common thread among the communities and states enrolled in the AARP age-friendly network is the belief that the places where we live are more livable, and better able to support people of all ages, when local leaders commit to improving the quality of life for the very young, the very old, and everyone in between.
The Age-Friendly Montgomery Survey is a community initiative aimed at enhancing the livability of Montgomery County, particularly for adults aged 55 and older by creating Age-Friendly communities. The survey is designed to gather input on various aspects such as Civic and Social Involvement; Communication and Outreach; Elder Abuse Prevention; Employment; Health and Wellness; Home and Community-Based Services; Affordable Housing; Planning; Outdoor Spaces, and Buildings; and Transportation and Mobility.
The survey and focus groups are opportunities for all community members to share their perspectives and observations to help shape improvements that benefit the rapidly growing and diverse older population of the county. Take advantage of any opportunity to participate and add your needs, wants, ideas, and comments to the survey; join the focus group hosted by Poolesville Seniors on March 2nd at Town Hall. If you are unable to attend this important in-person event please register for the focus group hosted online by the Upcounty Regional Services Center on February 24th at 2:00 pm. Registration is required.
County Executive Marc Elrich is leading these efforts, together with the County Council, government staff, residents across the County, community and faith-based organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders. Together, these community leaders offer critical input into planning for an Age-Friendly future that is designed to meet the changing needs of all County residents, with a focus on the older population.
An Age-Friendly Advisory Group oversees the efforts of the ten workgroups addressing areas considered essential to an age-friendly community. Based on the information gathered from the Age-Friendly Montgomery Survey, community focus groups and other sources, the work groups have established three-year strategic plans in key aspects deemed to improve resources and services.
