During inclement winter weather it is advisable that you stay off the road. However, if travel is unavoidable, be sure that you check your tires, windshield wipers, and car fluids. Here are some suggested items to keep in your car to help you prepare for an emergency.   

First Aid Kit –

  • Thermometer 
  • Analgesic (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) 
  • Wound cleanser 
  • Antibacterial ointment 
  • Bandages 
  • Old belt for tourniquet 
  • alcohol (this can also be used to unfreeze door locks and windshield wipers) 

Jumper Cables – Review how to use these, particularly for newer cars with hidden batteries and terminals. 

Flat Tire Kit – Keep a properly inflated spare tire, jack, and lug wrench & any specialty wheel lock key. A can of flat tire sealant for quick, short-term fixes. 

Flashlight and extra Batteries 

Cell phone charger with adapter or connector for the car.  

Fire Extinguisher In case of accident or engine fire. 

Auto Hammer/Seatbelt Slicer – This tool can break the windshield and cut through seatbelts in an emergency. 

Scraper/Brush tool to clear snow and ice 

Flares 

Blankets for every passenger. 

Hand /Foot Warmers 

Supplies for medical emergency ex. Juice boxes or nutrition bar for diabetics. 

Water for drinking
