On November 8th a total lunar eclipse will be fully visible in the Washington DC area. The total lunar eclipse is sometimes called a blood moon, because the Moon appears to turn red. The eclipse begins around 4:00 a.m. with the total eclipse beginning at 5:15 a.m. and the maximum eclipse at 6:00 a.m.

A total lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, and its shadow covers the Moon. Eclipse watchers can see the Moon turn red when the eclipse reaches totality. The curvature of the shadow’s path and the apparent rotation of the Moon’s disk is due to the Earth’s rotation.
