The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) has several programs supporting the preservation of African American history.

Under the umbrella of the Community Curation Platform, members of the museum community are invited to share the stories, photos and videos that make up their personal collections. The goal is to bring generations together through digital storytelling and continue the tradition that helps paint a more vivid and balanced picture of American history.

You can browse the collected stories or create an account and submit your own story or stories.

The Community Curation Platform provides a unique opportunity for individuals, families, and community groups to share their stories as part of the Museum’s online community collection. Begin sharing your stories today by creating an online account with the Museum and uploading your digitized photos and videos. Visit the Submission Guidelines to learn tips on digitizing and what makes for a great community story.

The Community Curation Platform is supported by the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Center for the Digitization and Curation of African American History. The Center offers free digitization services in communities across the U.S. conducts guided genealogy research sessions in the museum, works with institutions to preserve vulnerable collections, and hosts a robust internship and fellowship program.

Through the Community Curation Platform, the Center invites those who attend our Community Curation events and those who simply want to engage with our community to show the world there are myriad ways to tell black stories.

To get started, please review and accept the Terms and Conditions and then create your account to upload your first image or video. Not comfortable sharing? The platform invites anyone to browse and search its public stories to learn more about some of the unknown figures who have impacted our communities, culture, and history.
