The 2023 tax season officially began on January 23 and will end on April 18—giving taxpayers an additional three days to file their Federal Income Tax Return. If you made less than $73,000 in 2022, you can file using the IRS free file program. Use the Free IRS guided tax preparation and file for free using brand-name software used by commercial tax filing companies.

The IRS does not endorse any individual Free File Alliance partner company but a list of nine providers can be found at IRS Free File | Internal Revenue Service. Or you can use a simple questionnaire to find a suitable provider IRS Free File | Internal Revenue Service.

The agency expects more than 168 million Americans to file their taxes and has added more than 5,000 customer service representatives as a result of the Inflation Reduction Act to help answer questions over the phone and provide other services for taxpayers (the key help line is: 1-800-829-1040 and online tools or resources can be found on the IRS website).

If you expect a refund, you may want to file early. The IRS is hoping that returns will be processed, and refunds issued in 21 days for taxpayers who choose the direct deposit option when filing electronically. The IRS has a longer time to process returns claiming any tax credits.

Don’t forget that you need to submit your 2022 federal individual income tax filing by the extended deadline, April 18, 2023.

The extended 2022 Maryland State individual income tax filing deadline is April 18, 2023. If you had estimated tax to pay the extended deadlines may not apply.
