The 2024 tax season officially began on January 29 and will end on April 15—giving taxpayers an additional three days to file their Federal Income Tax Return. If you made $79,000 or more in 2023, you could file using the IRS free file program.
The IRS Free File program is a partnership between the IRS and tax preparation software companies. It allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their federal tax returns for free using commercial tax preparation software.
Use the Free IRS guided tax preparation and file for free beginning Jan. 29, 2024. Free File Fillable forms, a part of this effort, are available at no cost to any income level and provide electronic forms that people can fill out and e-file themselves also at no cost.

As a result of the Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS is developing its own tax filing software with a program called Direct File, expected to roll out in March 2024.

If you expect a refund, you may want to file early. The IRS is hoping that returns will be processed, and refunds issued quickly for taxpayers who choose the direct deposit option when filing electronically. The IRS has a longer time to process returns claiming any tax credits.
Don’t forget that you need to submit your 2023 federal individual income tax filing by the deadline, April 15, 2024.
