VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION NOTICE

Due to the rapid onset of elevated temperatures and lack of precipitation, most of the region is experiencing a moderate drought. Precipitation, groundwater, and streamflow levels have been dropping steadily over the past few weeks.

Poolesville is permitted by the State to withdraw 650,000 gallons of groundwater per day. Normal consumption is around 550,000 gallons per day. Currently, we are experiencing usage of over 700,000 gallons per day.

As summer approaches and dry conditions persist, many homeowners turn to watering lawns. Water department staff have reported significant lawn watering and increased usage, which can place a strain on Poolesville’s well system. Currently, we have our largest producing well out of service for PFAS treatment system installation, which puts additional strain on the remaining wells.

Poolesville water system customers should “limit non-essential” water usage. The Town is anticipating increased water demand due to increased temperatures and forecasted dry conditions. Effective immediately, the Town is asking for voluntary conservation and asking that residents minimize outdoor watering throughout the summer months and until the out of service well can be reinstated.
