Thank you to Barbara Paulson who took us on a virtual tour of the Virginia coastal region including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Hampton. Each city would be a great weekend destination, or you can combine the three for a longer journey of discovery.

Virginia Beach is noted for its beaches and 3-mile boardwalk that stretches 40 blocks from the 100% accessible children’s Grommet Park, north to 40th Street. Several State Parks and wildlife preserves, and historic homes offer something for everyone in the family.

Norfolk is home to the world’s largest naval base and the North American Headquarters for NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Historic sites and monuments, and attractions like the Hermitage, Chrystler museums, McArthur Memorial, Cannonball trail and botanical garden offer ample activities.

Hampton is the birthplace of America’s space program, NASA’s Langley Research Center where the film “Hidden Figures” introduced us to the human computers like Katherine Johnson who calculated the missions. Virginia Air & Space Science Center has been providing STEM education for 25 years. Hampton University, the oldest African American university in the US, is a special place and worthy of a visit as well.

This coastal Virginia area is full of history and recreational opportunities for a weekend getaway or vacation.
