2022-08-23T17:49:35-04:00

The second Poolesville Historic Marker in our series calling attention to the history around us is the Poolesville—Strategic Union Encampment – Gettysburg Campaign.  This marker is located in front of the John Poole House on the Coxen’s Road alley between the Old Bank Museum and John Poole House. The inscription which recounts more Civil War history reads:

During the Civil War, more soldiers passed through Poolesville than any other Montgomery County town. Union […]

Glorious Garlic

2022-08-22T17:51:41-04:00

Fresh garlic, which contains allicin, has been used for at least 4,000 years as a potent antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial. Garlic has been shown to naturally repel pests from the garden. You can use this multifunctional vegetable for its bulbs, leaves (from Softneck variety), or scapes (the central stalk in Hardneck varieties), eaten fresh or used in various dishes.

LABOR DAY, THE UNOFFICIAL END OF SUMMER

2022-08-22T17:49:10-04:00

Written By Cheryl Watts

In the U.S., Labor Day has become a symbol for the end of summer. For some it is a long weekend, an opportunity to enjoy a mini holiday and the last days of summer, a weekend of picnics, swimming and the sight and smell of barbeque smoke in the air.

RECAP: “The Glass Hotel” by Emily St. John Mandel

2022-08-21T18:04:45-04:00

Thank you to Michelle Roche who led our intrepid PS! Book Club’s discussion of the August Book Club Selection: The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel. Some readers found the book slow going in the beginning with its seemingly unrelated vignettes of so many characters. The effects of childhood trauma and the notion that “one can know and not know at the same time” eventually link the characters together in […]

Where Have All the Porches Gone

2022-08-21T18:04:17-04:00

Thank you to Kenny Sholes for another of his Ag Reserve Properties presentations. Those who follow Kenny’s monthly events are more than happy to follow him down any history “rabbit hole” he takes. The August evening started with a reflection: “Where have all the porches gone?” We saw a number of old photos of historic homes with prominent front porches that are now missing in current pics. One speculation was that the advent […]
