New Monthly Trail Hike Series

Beginning on Tuesday 10/17 Poolesville Seniors is debuting a new series of longer 4 – 6-mile trail hikes lasting approximately 2 – 3 hours in nearby parks. Led by hiking enthusiasts Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby, these monthly trail hikes will offer a bit more challenge than our C&O Pop-up Walks. They will be limited to 15 participants. Hiking boots are recommended, and water and a snack are advised.

On October 22nd, the Montgomery County Lynching Memorial Project* (MoCoLMP) will unveil the first historical marker in Montgomery County, in Poolesville, to acknowledge a racial terror lynching. Mr. George Peck was robbed of due process and murdered by a mob in Poolesville in 1880, one of three lynchings that took place in Montgomery County and thirty-eight in Maryland.

Monocacy Cemetery has several well-known residents, but John Andrew Rice was someone who had an incalculable influence on twentieth century culture. He and his second wife Dikka  are both buried at Monocacy Cemetery, having retired to the area to be near his son Peter’s family in Germantown and daughter Mary’s family in Arlington.
