After you have eaten several Thanksgiving dinners, sandwiches, and turkey salad what else can you do with the turkey? Here are some suggestions!

Never waste the turkey carcass. After you remove all the meat from the bones, Turkey Bone Soup should be next on the menu. Your crock pot makes it easy. Load the turkey carcass and any bones, skin, and bits and pieces into the crock pot with water or […]

The 988 National Hotline

2023-11-24T15:54:55-05:00

While we love to get together with family and friends during the holiday seasons, it can be a difficult time for anyone with mental or behavioral health issues. All that togetherness can bring problems to the surface, and we should all know how to find help for ourselves or our loved ones. Three years ago, Congress and, the Federal Communications Commission designated a new national 988 lifeline for mental and behavioral health […]

60th Anniversary of JFK’s Assassination

2023-11-19T18:38:26-05:00

By Denise Jacklin

Almost everyone of a certain age can tell you exactly what they were doing when they heard that President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot. Personally, I remember November 22, 1963, as a seventh grader in Friday afternoon art class at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic elementary school.

Our class was interrupted sometime after 12:30 by an announcement that the President had been shot and a call to stop all activities and […]

History of Thanksgiving

2023-11-18T13:47:15-05:00

Contributed by Cheryl Watts

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, during the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each year. The first Thanksgiving meal in Plymouth […]

Holiday Shopping Blitz

2023-11-18T13:39:52-05:00

Starting with Thanksgiving it will be a very busy few days. Last year many retailers did not open on Thanksgiving and this year many have not released their schedule for Thanksgiving yet. Check carefully so you don’t need to make last-minute store visits. Do whatever pre-prep and cooking that you can before the big day, so you have time to relax and enjoy your day with family and friends.

The day […]

Wreaths Across America

2023-11-18T14:00:53-05:00

For the holidays each year, Wreaths Across America (“WAA”) coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies to “Remember, Honor, and Teach” about the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families. This tradition began in 1992 as The Arlington Wreath project started with the laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery by Morrill Worcester.

WAA remained relatively obscure until 2005 when a photo of the snow-covered gravestones adorned with wreaths went viral, […]

Dance in the Ag Reserve

2023-11-12T14:42:43-05:00

Poolesville is very fortunate to have a vibrant culture of art, theater and dance unusual for such a small town. Dance first came to town in 1998 with Fran Ichijo’s Hope Garden Ballet Academy providing learning opportunities for untold numbers of dancers. After Fran retired, the studio reopened in 2022 as Essence Studios with former student and Poolesville native Claire Jones at the helm.

Claire has continued Fran’s tradition of providing the highest […]
