Meals-on-Wheels is a group of local organizations which provide meals to the elderly and shut-ins. The Gaithersburg group prepares hot and cold lunchtime meals at Asbury Methodist Village. Volunteer drivers are needed to pick up the meals at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. The food comes in a large cooler for cold food and a small cooler for hot meals.
The meals are delivered to clients at their home, between 11 AM and 1PM, Monday through Friday, except major holidays or if Montgomery County Schools are closed due to inclement weather. There are seven routes that cover the Gaithersburg area (a 3-mile distance from Asbury). There are between 8 – 12 clients per route. Most routes are completed within 1 ½ hours, so expect a total 2-hour commitment.
If you would like to volunteer, please leave your name and number on the Gaithersburg MOW main phone, 301-216-4200, and they will return your call. MOW will pay for the necessary background check before you start, and training is provided. You will need a car that can hold a large and small cooler. There is moderate bending and lifting.
Many MOW volunteers are retired but they also have couples, families, students and people whose workplace allows them time to volunteer. Most drivers take one day per week (e.g. every Tuesday) or every other week (just 2-3 times a month).
