Lunar New Year 2022

The Lunar New Year is the most important social and economic holiday for billions of people around the world. The holiday is tied to the lunar-solar Chinese calendar and was originally observed as a time to honor household and heavenly deities and ancestors.

2022 is the year of the Tiger and began February 1. The new year celebration lasts fifteen days. The tiger embodies courage and bravery, so the new year could symbolize resilience and strength — even in times of struggle.

Nian, a monster who is half dragon and half lion attacks people – especially children – during the Lunar New Year. Fireworks are used to scare him away and keep everyone safe. Sugary foods are indulged in because they are said to bring sweetness and prosperity for the coming year.

Lunar New Year is a time of beliefs and traditions. A time to be with family and friends.

On the first day, there is no cleaning or disposing of trash because that could wash away your good luck and prosperity for the year.

On the second day, you celebrate with family and friends.

The third day is a day prone to arguments, so you stay away from your family and friends.

Today, Lunar New Year is a special time to bring friends and family together for feasting and festivities in China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia, and other countries all over the world. Many communities in the United States host new year’s parades and celebrations to honor the tradition.
