As the days grow longer and nature awakens, spring is the perfect time to focus on water conservation and groundwater protection. March brings Groundwater Awareness and Fix a Leak Week, two timely reminders that small actions can make a big impact in safeguarding our water supply – both for the environment and personal wellness.

The Piedmont Sole Source Aquifer is an irreplaceable resource, supplying drinking water homes, farms and businesses across the Agricultural Reserve. It supports our communities, agriculture and local ecosystems. It is crucial as no feasible alternative exists should it become severely depleted or contaminated. This season is also a great time for preventative maintenance to keep our groundwater and abundant.

💧Check for household leaks. – Even a small drip can waste thousands of gallons per year. Common culprits are dripping faucets, showerheads or leaky valves that are often inexpensive, easy fixes.

💧Maintain your well. – Regular well inspections ensure safe drinking water. The EPA and state guidelines recommend inspecting and testing your well annually or when you notice a change in quality.

💧Keep hazardous chemicals away. – Store and dispose of chemicals safely. Paints, fertilizers, pesticides, motor oil and other solvents can leach into soil contaminating groundwater. Store them away from your well and never pour them down the drain. Let’s celebrate our precious aquifer this month by taking meaningful steps to protect this vital, unseen gift, flowing beneath our feet.
