The Orphan Drug Act

Join Jeff Fritsch on November 11th at 7:00 pm to hear about The Orphan Drug Act of 1983, a US law passed to incentivizes pharmaceutical companies to invest in the development of drugs and biologics to treat individuals with rare diseases. 

Over 1100 drugs have improved the lives of scores people.

Jeff Fritsch is a graduate of Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy where he received his BS degree for pharmacy in 1983.  He practiced pharmacy in a retail setting in Northern Virginia and Maryland for 16 years.  The retail pharmacies include Peoples Drug, Drug Emporium, Walmart, K Mart, and Target. He became a Commissioned Officer with the United Stated Public Health Service (USPHS) in 1999, and he began working for the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) as a project manager with the Division of Special Pathogens and Immunologic Drug Products.  Two years later he transferred to FDA’s Office of the Commissioner where he worked for the Office of Orphan Products Development (OOPD) as a regulatory review officer.  He remained with OOPD for 21 plus years.  He retired from Federal service in November 2022.
