Praying for Sheetrock by Melissa Fay Greene

Praying for Sheetrock is the non-fiction saga of the first black commissioner in a Georgia backwater seemingly bypassed by the civil rights movement. The political awakening of this isolated African American community in coastal McIntosh County is accelerated by events that challenge the power-wielding sheriff and generate a struggle for justice and dignity.

Author

Melissa Fay Greene was born in Macon, Georgia, moved in childhood to Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from Oberlin College in 1975. She returned to Georgia in ’75 to work for the Savannah office of Georgia Legal Services and was a witness to most of the events about which she later would write in Praying for Sheetrock.
