Thank you to Julien Singh the post commander at the Poolesville Daniel-Jeffers American Legion Post 247 for his virtual Veteran’s Day presentation.

Veterans Day is observed on November 11 in commemoration of the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between the Allies and Germany, declaring a cessation of WWI hostilities on the western front effective at the 11th hour (am) of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

The American Legion is the largest Veteran’s organization in the U.S. and the Poolesville Daniel-Jeffers Post has almost 80 members. This post was originally formed in Boyds in 1954. It now meets at the Poolesville Calleva office on the first Monday of the month.

You are eligible to join the American Legion if you were honorably discharged and served at least one day of federal active-duty service in the United States Armed Forces or are still active-duty. If you are one of the estimated 350 veterans in the area, contact Post 247 for specific membership eligibility requirements.

The group supports family-centered activities like the September walk across the Potomac River near White’s Ford with local Scouts, the fundraising Square Dance and Saloon Dinner at the Calleva Barn, student essay contests, speaking engagements for the Scouts, and support of veterans.

You can see this recorded event on our Facebook and YouTube channels. Remember to honor our veterans on Wreaths Across America Day 12/18 by donating wreaths or volunteering to lay the wreaths on veteran’s graves.
