If you are a Maryland homeowner who has received a county tax property credit on your property tax bill, please be advised that a new law requires homeowners to have a completed and approved Homestead application on file with the State Department of Assessments and /taxation (SDAT) to be eligible for the County’s Income Tax Offset Credit (ITOC). This credit appears on your annual property tax bill.

Even if you received the credit already on your tax bill, that Income Tax Offset Credit (ITOC) will no longer appear on your future tax bills without the approved Homestead application on file. If the approved application is not on file by May 1, 2023, the new Maryland law requires the county to take back the amount of credit given on your 2022 taxes.

Currently, application processing is taking several months, so put this at the top of your to-do list. Find the status of your Homestead eligibility by looking up your property on the Real Property database.

You need to have an Access Number issued by SDAT to complete the application online. To receive an Access Number, email your name, address with the subject line: “Montgomery County Homestead Tax Credit” to at sdat.homestead@maryland.gov. SDAT will send you your access number and directions for filing the application online at https://dat.maryland.gov/homestead.

If you have any questions, please email sdat.homestead@maryland.gov or call 410-767-2165 (toll free 1-888-650-8783)
