Wright Brothers Day

In 1878 when Wilbur and Orville Wright were 11 and 7 years old, their father gave them a toy based on the model airplane, the planophore, designed by French aeronautical engineer Alphonse Penaud. The small model helicopter was made from bamboo, paper, and cork and was powered by a rubber band. The toy fascinated the boys and sparked their lifelong interest in flying and aeronautics. The rest is history.

The family moved often […]

Tax Breaks Expiring in 2025

Without congressional action before the end of 2025, the tax breaks for individuals enacted during the previous Trump administration will expire. Those were related to marginal rates, the standard deduction amounts, the child tax credit and other provisions. The rules were part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, a law overhauling income-tax rules for individuals, estates, small businesses and corporations.

Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for the tax years beginning after […]

Warm Holiday Comfort Toddys

What Is a Hot Toddy?

Historically, hot toddies seemed to first appear in Scotland in the 1700s, where publicans added a splash of boiling water to their drams of whiskey to ward off the brutal northern winters. They added sweeteners and spices to the drink to make it more palatable to the ladies.

Alternate explanations are an Irish physician named Todd who prescribed a hot brandy-based drink, and a hot medicinal […]

St. Lucia Day

St. Lucia’s (St. Lucy) Day is a festival of lights, celebrated widely in Scandinavia and Italy. It signifies the beginning of the Christmas season on December 13th. St Lucia, whose name means light, was a young girl martyred in 304 A.D. under the Christian persecution orders of the Roman Emperor Diocletian.
