150th Anniversary Metropolitan Branch B&O

Beginning in 1828 the B&O Railroad began expanding from east to west. By 1861 it reached 13 states, but was missing a spur to Washington, D.C.

In 1865 the B&O purchased the bankrupted Metropolitan Railroad to gain its charter to build a Washington spur. The section from Dickerson to the main line at Point of Rocks was finished in 1871. The Metropolitan Branch from Silver Spring to Brunswick, MD was opened to the […]

Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for healthy tooth, bone, and muscle growth and maintenance. There is also evidence that by binding with receptors in the hair follicles, vitamin D can help maintain hair growth.

The sun is the primary, natural source of vitamin D. Our skin absorbs UVB rays, and our liver and kidneys create a usable form of vitamin D. Some foods, including egg yolks and fish (like salmon and tuna) provide vitamin […]

World Bee Day

Crop pollination is crucial for crop survival and feeding the world population. Eighty-seven of the one hundred fifteen crop species that make up most of the global food supply depend on bee pollination. Close to 75 percent of the world’s crops producing fruits and seeds for human use depend, at least in part, on pollinators. The value of the U.S. food crops that depend on pollination by bees alone is […]

Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month was created by a joint congressional resolution in 1992. May coincides with two key milestones, the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, and the contribution of Chinese immigrants to the transcontinental railroad, completed on May 10, 1869. In 2021, a presidential proclamation expanded this to include Native Hawaiians.

This year’s theme is a continuation of the “Advancing Leaders” theme of the […]

The Origins of Mother’s Day

Celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday May 14th. This celebration can be traced back as far as ancient Greek and Roman festivals honoring mother goddesses; and an early Christian Lenten festival, “Mothering Sunday”.

As celebrated in the United States, Mother’s Day predates the Civil War when Ann Reeves Jarvis promoted “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship […]

V-E Day

On May 8, 1945, after WWII had ravaged Europe for 5 years, the German army surrendered and the world celebrated Victory in Europe Day. The allies were unwilling to provoke Joseph Stalin and insisted that Germany surrender to all the […]

Jewish American Heritage Month

Last month, President Biden proclaimed May as ‘Jewish American Heritage Month’, celebrating the enduring heritage of Jewish Americans, whose values, culture, and contributions have helped to shape our character as a Nation.

Biden highlighted the flight of Jewish refugees to America searching for sanctuary over centuries, while citing the Jewish role in America’s earliest fights for religious freedom, Union soldiers celebrating Passover during the Civil War, Jewish suffragists fighting to expand freedom […]
