June 2nd National Donut Day

National Donut Day is the first Friday in June, 6/2. While fried dough confections have existed in most cultures, the U.S. roots go back to the fried dough scraps, oilykoeks (oil cakes), of 1700s Dutch settlers. The fried dough often remained uncooked in the center, prompting some to fill the center with nuts to help complete cooking, thus the doughnut moniker. In 1847, sixteen-year-old schooner crew member Hanson Crockett Gregory punched a hole […]

Memorial Day

The first official national commemoration of Memorial Day, known then as Decoration Day, was held in Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868, to honor the more than 620,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the single bloodiest military conflict in American history. After World War I, the holiday continued to evolve, eventually commemorating American military personnel who died in all wars, […]

Remembering Gene Bennett

We have learned with great sadness that former founding member of Poolesville Seniors, Gene Bennett, has passed away. From the time Poolesville Seniors started as the Gathering Place in 2012, until 2016 when we gained nonprofit status as Poolesville Area Senior Center, Inc., Gene played a critical part in guiding those transitions. He was a shrewd businessman of few words who ensured that the organization met the legal requirements for the organization to operate at […]

Older Americans Month

May is “Older Americans Month”. It was originally designated by President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens as “Senior Citizens Month,” in April 1963 to raise awareness about the plight of citizens over 65. At the time, one-third of all seniors lived in poverty with few social programs available to help support them.

Two years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act of […]
