Black Rock Mill

If you are looking for an outing near to home, try the Black Rock Mill located right in the middle of Seneca State Park and Greenway Trail. It is a good place for exploration adjacent to Black Rock Road between Route 28 and Germantown Road.

In 1760, a tract of land on Seneca Creek, known as “Black Rock,” was deeded to John Brisco. In 1815, Thomas Hilleary built the Black Rock Grist & […]

Summer Heat Exhaustion

This Summer may be a trial weather-wise. It is especially important for those of us 50 and better to monitor ourselves in the extreme heat. Be particularly careful if you are exercising outdoors or indoors without sufficient air conditioning. Adults over the age of 65 and young children also have a higher risk for heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses. This is because their bodies cannot cool down as easily as those of older […]

National Hotdog Day

In the melting pot of the United States we are fortunate that immigrants from many countries bring and adapt their native foods for us to enjoy. During these Summer months we should be grateful to a German immigrant, Charles Feltman, who was 15 years old when he arrived in New York in 1856. Eleven years later he began his own business, pushing a cart through the Coney Island sand dunes selling pies. His […]

Poolesville Grand Marshals

It may seem that Poolesville Day is far off in the future, but September 23rd will be here sooner than you think. Right now, you can take part in the preparations by helping the Poolesville Day Committee choose the Grand Marshal for the parade.

Every year since 1992 – except the pandemic years – Poolesville has observed its annual festival, celebrating Poolesville, its residents and the communities in the Western County […]

Maryland’s first State Forester

If you ever flew over Maryland, you’ve seen how green it is. In fact, it is the fourth greenest state in the Union (U.S. News & World Reports). When driving through the Maryland countryside you might also have noted the absence of annoying billboards. These are two reasons we should be grateful to Fred Wilson Besley, Maryland’s first State Forester.

Besley was born in 1872 in Northern VA, and graduated from Maryland Agricultural […]
