The mission of One Acre Farm is to deliver organically grown vegetables to our local community, while minimizing the impact on the environment, maintaining a sustainable business, and paying their employees a fair wage.
Despite its name, One Acre Farm sits on 34 acres in Montgomery County's Agricultural Reserve. In 2006, Farmer Mike Protas started his farming business, renting a small plot of land and farming on just one acre of it. What felt like a herculean task at the time would leave its legacy in the name for decades to come.
Farmer Mike wanted to create a community where people can feel an association with the farm, farmers, crops and vegetables they serve their family. If you're a member of the farm community, or even if you are not, you are welcome to stop by and check it out, just email the farm team.
The farm may not be certified organic, but you can be rest assured that they are using all organic growing principles while growing your veggies. Being certified organic is an expensive, long, bureaucratic process, so while they don't have organic certification, they do follow all of the same growing principles as any certified organic farm. Being organic is about making sure the vegetables you eat are free of chemicals you don't want to consume, but also about ensuring a sustainable environment for the rest of the ecosystem we touch, from the animals, insects, water, land, etc. Rest assured, the farm does all of those things!
One Acre Farm prioritizes sustainability, growing good food, and building strong relationships. Three things that they believe are crucial to a successful CSA program. From the multiple practices they utilize to build soil health and ecological diversity, to ensuring that their employees are paid well, the CSA is more than just the veggies you receive each week. Everything is connected, and they hope that you get that feeling of community when you join the farm.
Education is a top priority of Farmer Mike's, and there are multiple opportunities to learn about local and sustainable agriculture. Members receive a newsletter each week chock-full with farm insights, news, and great recipes for using what you receive in your bag.
When you enroll in the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), you are purchasing a share of vegetables from One Acre Farm for a season. Your appreciation for local food will only grow, your cooking skills will expand, and they're sure you'll find more reasons to sit down together as a family to eat a healthy meal made from vegetables grown right around the corner.
Join One Acre Farm CSA for the best year ever! A CSA is a great way to nourish you and your family and support a vibrant community of local agriculture.
