Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely Jr.

Join retired US Army Lt. Col. Blair Sawyer on November 10th at 7 p.m. to learn about the distinguished career of Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely Jr., who began as a seaman apprentice at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois, in 1942. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Gravely would go on to be the U.S. Navy’s first African American to command a Navy ship, become fleet commander, captain, flag officer, rear admiral, and vice admiral.  Vice Admiral Gravely had a guided missile destroyer named in his honor, the USS Gravely (DDG-107) commissioned November 20, 2010.

Blair Sawyer is a retired Lt. Col. US Army and a graduate of Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA and he holds a Master of Business Administration. He is the current president of the Virginia Union University Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely Jr. Capital Beltway Alumni Chapter.
