It was a beautiful Thursday evening as Poolesville Landscape Architect Bernie Mihm hosted practical and instructional hands-on demonstrations of summer pruning, planting, weed control and lawn care.

Many thanks to Bernie for important tips like these for pruning bushes:

  • Try to prune soon after their seasonal bloom to prevent removing next season’s growth.
  • Know something about the plant you wish to prune. They have different pruning preferences. Some, like boxwoods, set new growth on old wood, so a severe cutback may be disastrous. Others like White Hydrangeas and Butterfly Bushes set their new blooms on new growth, so feel free to prune vigorously each year.
  • When pruning, do not give your plant a flattop. Pick some of the longest stems and cut them back to the intersection with another branch. This allows light into the center of the plant for improved growth and gives a more natural shape.

If you missed this gathering, we’re sorry, it was not recorded for replay. But you can see some past recorded events featuring Bernie’s landscaping advice on our YouTube channel!
