DESCRIPTION:CPR Training Class Open to Public! \nLimited Spaces Available – Pre-Registration Required\nVenue – Speer Hall\, located behind Poolesville Presbyterian Church \nJoin Poolesville Seniors on Friday March 3rd at 9:00 a.m. when the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department brings CPR Training to Poolesville. UMCVFD will provide the training at Speer Hall. There is a $45 fee to be paid to UMCVFD which covers the cost of the student training materials and the American Heart Association CPR card. \nClass is limited to 12 Students. Registration is required.  \n\nStudents should be able to kneel on the floor for an extended period \n\n\nStudents should wear comfortable clothes \n\n\nWe do not break for lunch. Feel free to bring water\, plus a snack or power bar \n\n Payment information will be provided in your registration confirmation email. \nUMCVFD The UMCVFD was created\, built\, and supported by the members of the community in the western part of Montgomery County. Community involvement is the critical component responsible for the success of this organization. DESCRIPTION:Join Tina Clarke\, Montgomery County community activist on February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. when she discusses the history of the Black community of Jerusalem in Poolesville and her early years growing up in the Clarke family there. She will visit the significance that religion\, family\, housing\, social life\, education\, and transportation played in the development of the community.  \n \nPresenter Short Bio:     \nChristine Clarke is a sixth generation Marylander and Montgomery County native. Her family\, the Clarkes of Poolesville\, is regarded as one of the first black families who fought for civil rights in Montgomery County a century ago.  \nShe has lived through integration and spent her whole life as a community activist fighting for equality. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her work including the Living Legend Award in 2017\, and she was inducted into the County's Human Rights Hall of Fame in 2006.  \nMs. Clarke\, along with other members of the African American community\, is working on a national project to create designs for historic site designation and recognition.  \nFor more than thirty years\, Ms. Clarke was a County Government employee. She spent a total of 16 years serving as the County's African American Liaison Officer.  \nShe still substitutes\, working with special needs students at South Lake Elementary School in Gaithersburg.  \nTina Clarke – Jerusalem Community and the Clarke Family

DESCRIPTION:The detective novel "Still Life" by Louise Penny is the first of the long-running series featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators. It is our introduction to the tiny hamlet of Three Pines\, just north of the U.S. border. Using his uncanny skills Gamache suspects more than a hunting accident in the death of a local woman in the woods. \nLouise Penny is a Canadian author who lives in a small town in eastern Quebec. Penny earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts (Radio and Television) from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in 1979. After graduation she embarked on an 18-year career as a radio host and journalist with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). After she turned to writing\, she won numerous awards for her work\, including the Agatha Award for best mystery novel of the year five times\, including four consecutive years (2007–2010)\, and the Anthony Award for best novel of the year five times\, including four consecutive years (2010–2013). Her novels have been published in 23 languages. She has also been honored with the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec.  \nBook Club Registration!

DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on February 16th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country's best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. DESCRIPTION:Join Claudia Golenda\, Vice President and one of the archivists for the Boyds Historical Society on February 9th. This special Black History Month presentation will cover the history and preservation of the Boyds Negro School\, the only school for children of color in that area between 1896 and 1936.   \nPresenter Bio: Claudia Golenda is currently the vice president and one of the archivists at the Boyds Historical Society.  She gives tours of the Boyds Negro School during Open Houses and is involved in grant writing for the Boyds Historical Society.  She retired from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research after 30 years of working on vaccine development.  After retirement she worked for a government contractor for 6 years and wrote grants for clinical trials that were related to vaccine development for diseases important to the military.
