SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join local historian Kenny Sholes virtually on January 18th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.  \nHistoric Ag Reserve Properties

SUMMARY:PS! Book Club: Tom Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first 2024 meeting of the virtual PS! Book Club on January 15th at 7:00 p.m.\, when we discuss Tom Lake\, a novel by Ann Patchett. As with most of Patchett's work\, this is a story of family and relationships. Lara's college age daughters have returned to the family farm to harvest during the pandemic. While picking cherries\, Lara relates stories from her own past at her daughter's age\, particularly\, her relationships with an actor who later becomes famous. The stories change the daughter's perception of their mother and may change their futures.  \nBring the title of a book you would like to read or already enjoyed and help us choose the reading list. \nAnn Patchett was born in Los Angelos and lived in Nashville\, TN from the age of six. She is a novelist\, essayist\, children's author\, non-fiction writer\, and co-owner of Parnassus Bookstore in Nashville. \nPS! Book Club: Tom Lake Registration

SUMMARY:Woodworking Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join us in-person on Wednesday\, January 10th at 10:30 a.m. for a demonstration of artisan woodworking on a lathe. William Price will demonstrate his skill of making bowls with local wood to a small group of 8 in his barn. Long lasting and finished with oil and wax\, these bowls are completely food safe and can be used indefinitely with proper care.  \nWilliam comes from a line of wood workers including carpenters and furniture makers. William has made and refinished furniture\, and now\, loves to make plates and bowls from interesting pieces of wood.   \nThe lathe is in an unheated barn so dress warmly. Coffee will be on hand to keep us warm! Eye and ear protection will be available for all who need it.  \nLocation: Barn at 21800 Beallsville Rd. (North from Poolesville on 109\, after you go under the railroad coming into Barnesville it is the fourth house on the left. The sign says Cherry's Jubilee. If you get to Hiltons turn around.)  \nWilliam Price spent his career as a CPA/CFP\, but apparently woodworking is a genetic code.  Way back in the early 1800's William's ancestor\, George Price\, was a ships carpenter. Throw in the Hiltons influence from his grandmother\, and you have furniture makers. His granddad and dad both had woodworking skills.   \nWilliam first turned wood in shop class during high school. He refinished furniture for neighbors\, made a muzzle loading rifle during college\, and really started to make sawdust once he married Cherry and had space at home for a workshop.   \nWilliam still makes a piece of furniture occasionally\, but for relaxation he spins a lot of bowls and plates on the lathe.   \nMost of the wood William uses is local\, storm damaged or the result of someone taking down a tree on their property. He is a little more selective now\, for him to accept a piece of wood it has to be very interesting\, or someone wants an item from their home property.   \nThe bowls William makes are finished with oil and wax\, completely food safe. Cared for they should last indefinitely. William and Cherry have pieces they have been using for over thirty years.   \n\nWoodworking Demonstration\n

SUMMARY:Great Falls Popup Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz at 10:30 a.m. December 6th at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center for a Great Falls Popup Walk. The hike will begin by walking up a hill behind lock 19 where participants will be treated to scenic views of the canal and Potomac River.  We will walk along the ridge line and then back down the hill where we will cross over the canal at the stop gate just above lock 16. We will walk down to lock 16 to view the lock and the etchings on a coping stone that read\, “J.W. Fisher\, Jr.” and “W. Spong”. We will walk back up the towpath to the trail that leads to the Great Falls overlook. Then we will walk back to the Great Falls Tavern. There will be a few spots where a walking stick will be useful.  Along the walk we will pass locks 16\, 17\, 18\, 19 and 20.  The total length of the hike is 3 ½ miles. The Overlook Trail is medium difficulty\, and the towpath has no difficulty.  \n  \nA National Park Pass is required -Bring your senior or annual park pass to enter the Park. Otherwise\, entrance to Great Falls Park is $20 per vehicle (credit\, debit or contactless payment ONLY no cash). Dogs are not allowed on the Olmstead Island Trail.  The first part is an intermediate level hike on the Overlook Trail and then walking on the towpath is an easy hike. We should be back at the parking lot at Great Falls by 1:30 pm.  \nCarpooling and Park Pass sharing – Meet at 9:30 am at the far end of the Our Lady of the Presentation parking lot and bring your Park pass if you have one to share among vehicles.  \nPark Passes can be purchased online at www.recreation.gov    \n  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our “pop-up” walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White’s Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.  \nGreat Falls Popup Walk

SUMMARY:Monocacy Aqueduct Pop-up Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz on Monday October 30th at 10:00 a.m. for a 3 ¾ mile Pop-up Walk on the C&O Canal. After meeting at the Monocacy Aqueduct parking lot\, we will walk out to the mouth of the Monocacy River to view the trees looking out across the Potomac River towards Virginia.  Walking back to the aqueduct we'll view the mystery stone beneath the first arch. We'll cross the aqueduct to the Indian Flats campground\, then walk back down the canal crossing the aqueduct to view the old canal basin\, the Little Monocacy River\, the waste weir\, lock 27 and lock house continuing down to milepost 41. Along the way\, we will view the remains of a Native American fish weir. Walking back to the parking lot we will walk up the entrance road a short distance to view the earthworks that remain from the Monocacy Civil War block house. The turning leaves should be beautiful along the walk.   \nJon Wolz\, the leader of our "pop-up" walks and our local expert on the C&O Canal\, has had a long history with the canal. Since 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.  \nPut the name of the event here with no special characters and click Update Text

SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors virtually on October 19th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. \nIn 1933\, as part of the New Deal\, the National Park Service launched the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). "Guided by field instructions from Washington\, D.C.\, the first HABS recorders were tasked with documenting a representative sampling of America's architectural heritage." Luckily for us\, many of the historic Ag Reserve homes were documented. In most cases\, these are the oldest pictures we have of these structures. Join Kenny Sholes as we explore some of these amazing structures. \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country's best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.   \n  \n \nHistoric Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
