SUMMARY:PS! Book Club: The Women
DESCRIPTION:Join the PS! Book Club on Zoom\, June 17th at 7:00 p.m.\, when we discuss The Women\, a novel by Kristen Hannah. Twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath comes from a ‘Navy’ family. After her brother enlists\, she overhears the words\, ‘Women can be heroes’\, and the revelation sparks a plan to follow him to Vietnam as a nurse.  \nThe Women is the story of one woman gone to war\, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism\, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.   \nSuggested reading for remainder of 2024:  \nJuly Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman  \nAugust The Alice Network by Kate Quinn  \nSeptember The Lying Game by Ruth Ware  \nOctober Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng  \nNovember The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman  \nDecember This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett  \nPS! SUMMARY:May PS! Book Club Music in the Halls
DESCRIPTION:Join the PS! Book Club on Monday May 20 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom when we discuss Music in the Halls by Poolesville poet\, author\, and educator\, Bernie Jankowski. Through vignettes\, essays\, snapshots\, portraits\, and poems\, Music in the Halls reveals the inner workings of a high-poverty District of Columbia Public School. In it\, Bernie shows the visceral and emotional nature of childhood poverty and trauma and how it not only impacts a student’s ability to learn but also how it restricts their ability to live a full life. Uncovering the interwoven worlds of children and their parents\, teachers and administrators\, and the DCPS bureaucracy– all residing in close proximity to the nation’s capital– Music in the Halls is not simply a tale of hard knocks; it is an exploration of how one man’s understanding and compassion can be transformed and expanded to encompass and embrace this world.  \nBernard Jankowski is currently a Special Education teacher at JPMS. He was formerly Head of the English Department and an AP Teacher at RICA\, an educational facility serving adolescents with severe emotional disabilities. Previously\, he was a Teacher and Special Education Coordinator at a high-poverty elementary school. Prior to teaching\, he led a groundbreaking foundation research service. He has published two full-length poetry collections and is recipient of the Evelyn Elder Award for American Literature from Montgomery College.  \nPS! Book Club: Music in the Halls

SUMMARY:Trail Hike: Seneca Creek Greenway to Berryville
DESCRIPTION:Join Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby on Thursday March 14th at 10:30 a.m. for a trail hike along Seneca Creek on the Seneca-Greenway Trail. We will meet for this straightforward 5-mile hike at the MD 28 Trailhead Parking Lot (near the intersection of Rt 107 and Rt 28) at 10:30 am.  The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain of 187 feet.  It should take about 2 hours. For the first 10 minutes of the hike\, we may be annoyed by the noise of traffic on Route 28.  Then we will hike at a moderate pace\, parallel to Seneca Creek as it goes meandering. It is quiet and delightful.  Boots and a snack are recommended.  The tread is full of leaves and packed dirt with minimal roots and rocks.   \nDirections: Drive east from Poolesville on Route 28 about a quarter of a mile past the Route 28-Route 107 junction\, cross the bridge over Seneca Creek. Turn left into the parking lot on the left that has spaces for 15-20 cars.  We will meet there at 10:30 am\, walk under the bridge and hike along Seneca Creek on the Seneca-Greenway Trail.  \n  Karen Dansby was born and raised in Arlington\, VA. She spent 20+ years in eastern Kentucky\, then retired to Sedona\, AZ. Karen participated in trail maintenance in Sedona\, hiked and participated in Preventive Search and Rescue for almost 10 years at the South and North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  She moved back to Poolesville to be close to family.   \nGwen Haney grew up in rural PA but did most of her hiking while living in Arizona\, in the mountains and canyons of the southwest. She moved to Maryland 17 years ago to be near family and continues to enjoy being outdoors and on trails.   \nWatch for other hikes in and around Montgomery County for Poolesville Seniors.  Once a month Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby will lead/tailgate a hike for Poolesville Seniors.  The hikes will be 4-6 miles and last approximately 2-3 hours.  A description will be given of the monthly hike with hiking recommendations.  \nTrail Hike: Seneca Creek Greenway to Berryville

SUMMARY:Pop Up Walk: Sugarloaf White Rock Overlook
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz on Thursday\, February 8th at 10:00 a.m. at the west parking lot on top of Sugarloaf Mountain.  We will follow the blue trail out to the White Rocks Overlook. There is very nice scenery along the way. The footing will be rocky at times. There will be up and down hills along the walk. A walking stick is suggested. The round-trip hike is five miles. This is an intermediate level hike.  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.  \nPop Up Walk: Sugarloaf White Rock Overlook
