SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on February 16th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country's best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University. \nHistoric Properties with Kenny Sholes – February 2023 Registration!

SUMMARY:Thurgood Marshall: Trail-Blazing Civil Rights Victory
DESCRIPTION:Join history aficionado\, Ralph Buglass\, on February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. as we begin our celebration of Black History Month. One of the first successful legal challenges to school segregation occurred right here in Montgomery County in 1937. Civil rights icon Thurgood Marshall sued Montgomery County School Board and Superintendent Edwin Broome for equal pay on behalf of Willian B. Gibbs\, principal and teacher at Rockville Colored Elementary School.   \nThis little-known legal case has been called the first step in Marshall's legal battle to have separate schools for white and black children declared unconstitutional. It took seventeen years before Marshall\, the lead attorney\, argued and won Brown v. Board of Education\, the landmark decision before the Supreme Court. This illustrated talk details this remarkable local story and its national significance. Spoiler alert: his victory came at a tremendous cost to William Gibbs. \n  \nPresenter Bio: Ralph Buglass is a retired communications professional\, Montgomery County native\, and graduate of Winston Churchill High School. He earned a BA in American history from Cornell University and an MA in journalism from American University. Ralph has been a volunteer docent at the restored one-room Kingsley Schoolhouse in Clarksburg\, an experience that sparked a deep interest in the early days of public education in Montgomery County.  He was the 2014 recipient of a national service award from the Country Schoolhouse Association of America for his volunteer work.    \nRalph is a frequent speaker for Montgomery History on a variety of local history topics and a volunteer researcher for Peerless Rockville\, the nonprofit historic preservation organization for Montgomery County's seat of government. In 2020\, with Peerless Rockville\, he co-authored Images of America: Rockville\, a pictorial history of the city's 250 years. He taught lifelong learning courses at American University\, Johns Hopkins University\, Montgomery College\, and Frederick Community College.  \nThurgood Marshall: A Trailblazing Civil Rights Victory
