SUMMARY:Off the Beaten Path - Asheville\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Join travel expert Barbara Paulson on Thursday\, July 27th at 7:00 p.m. to explore the hidden gems of Ashville\, nestled in the mountains of North Carolina. Yes\, there's the world's largest private residence (the Vanderbilt's 250-room Biltmore)\, but there's so much more to this genteel southern town with the hip vibe. There are Appalachian artisans\, the Moog synthesizer store and factory\, the highest per capita number of microbreweries in the U.S. (hence one of Asheville's nicknames: "Brew City USA")\, a 35-site 1.7-mile urban walking trail\, and author Thomas Wolfe's childhood home.  \nPresenter Short Bio:     \nMs. Paulson is an experienced traveler in the Mid-Atlantic area and Europe\, and a life-long learner who particularly enjoys art and history museums and sharing her experiences with fellow travelers.    \nOff the Beaten Path Asheville

SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE SORRY THAT KENNY IS UNAVAILABLE TONIGHT FOR THE AG RESERVE PROPERTIES EVENT. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR NEXT MONTH’S EVENT! \nJoin Poolesville Seniors on July 20th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us. \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today. \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country’s best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a  Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.

SUMMARY:Ernie Pyle
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 29th at 7:00 p.m. for Byline: Ernie Pyle\, a one-man show created by Steve LaRocque of the Montgomery History Speakers Bureau. This program showcases excerpts from the famous wartime newspaper columns of Pulitzer Prize winning WWII correspondent Ernie Pyle. One of the first "embedded" reporters\, Ernie Pyle wrote a column that ran daily in the Scripps-Howard newspapers during World War II. President Harry S. Truman spoke of how Pyle "told the story of the American fighting man as the American fighting men wanted it told."  \nByline: Ernie Pyle features actor Steve LaRocque as Ernie Pyle\, recounting the major events of World War II in Pyle's own words (used by permission of the Scripps-Howard Foundation). The actor becomes the reporter\, appalled at the tragic waste of war and the brutal conditions it imposes on the ordinary American men who fought it\, and yet remained personally committed to going back to it\, again and again.  In-person at Speer Hall\, 17800 Elgin Rd. (109). \nPresenter Short Bio:     \nSteve LaRocque has been active as a performer\, director\, and playwright in the greater Washington\, DC\, area since 1994. He has appeared as an actor in more than a dozen productions at Silver Spring Stage and has had eleven of his one-act plays produced there. He is also a charter member of the Quotidian Theatre Company of Bethesda and has appeared in more than twenty Quotidian productions. A retired Navy officer\, he served 29 years on active duty.  \nKathie Mack has called Montgomery County home since 1975. She loves history\, knitting\, and the performing arts. When she gets up on stage herself these days\, it is usually to sing in nursing homes.  \nLocation: Speer Hall\, Poolesville Presbyterian Church – 17800 Elgin Road \nErnie Pyle

SUMMARY:Riley's Lockhouse Tour and Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Poolesville Seniors on June 19th at 10:00 a.m. when we will tour lockhouse 24 at Riley's Lock. The tour will be given by lockhouse docent Shelby Garrison. The house's decor depicts life in the 1870s when lock keeper Allen Benson lived there with his family. This very well restored lockhouse is one and a half stories over a full basement.   \nAfter the tour\, join Jon Wolz for a pop-up walk where we will walk over the Seneca Aqueduct to the canal boat basin used to load boats for the Seneca quarries. We will then walk back across the aqueduct town to Violette's Lock. Walking a little farther down the towpath\, we will visit the historic stone that has "22 MILES TO W C" carved on it. We will head back to lock 24 and depart. The roundtrip walk is about three miles. Expect to see a variety of birds along the way. Registration is required and limited to 15.   \nLocation: 13015 Riley's Lock Rd\, Poolesville\, MD 20837  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill. Since 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on June 15th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country's best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University. \nHistoric Properties with Kenny Sholes – June 2023 Registration!

SUMMARY:Animals in the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Join Brad Stone in-person on June 13th at 7:00 p.m.\, as this National Museum of Civil War Medicine volunteer outlines how animals served our nation during that period. In fact\, animals played an indispensable role in nearly every major aspect of the Civil War.   \nContributions were made by a wide variety of animals including dogs\, cats\, camels\, badgers\, pigs\, silkworms\, and almost elephants. Farm animals were sources of vital food and war materials. Horses and mules transported essential supplies to the armies. Horse cavalry enhanced the armies' offensive and intelligence operations. And animal mascots comforted and inspired soldiers on the battlefront. Their service and sacrifice left a legacy that continues in our military to this very day.  \nPresenter Short Bio: Brad Stone is a volunteer at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick\, MD and aboard the USS Constellation in Baltimore Harbor. Over the past few years\, he has developed presentations on an assortment of Civil War-related topics. His talks have been given at a wide variety of venues including the Gettysburg Heritage Center\, the Antietam Battlefield National Park and the U.S. Navy Museum at the Navy Yard in Washington\, DC.  A couple of his talks have also been televised nationally on C-SPAN3 American History TV. \nMovie Night – Animals in the Civil War
