SUMMARY:Pop-Up Walk: White's Ferry Paw Paws
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever tried a pawpaw? These delicious local wild fruits are ripening this week. Join local naturalist Jon Wolz for a Pop-Up Paw Paw Walk on Thursday\, September 14th at 10:00 a.m. Meet in the White's Ferry parking lot and we will walk from Whites Ferry along the C&O Tow Path in search of this succulent fruit nicknamed the "poor man's banana". We'll learn how to find and collect these treats and hear about some of the ways you can use them.  \nThis walk will be less than a half mile each way along the Tow Path. After returning to White's Ferry\, join the group for a social get-together over your own lunch or one purchased at the locally renown White's Ferry Grill.     \nWear appropriate clothing (long pants) and proper footwear for walking through the underbrush since the trees are located close to but off the path. Bring a plastic bag/s to collect your pawpaws.     \nParticipants need to register on poolesvilleseniors.org prior to the walk. If you need to cancel\, please email info@poolesvilleseniors.org. The registration is limited to 15 participants.       \nSince 1970\, Jon Wolz\, the leader of our "pop-up" walks and our local expert on the C&O Canal\, has had a long history with the canal. Since 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.    \n  \nPaw Paw Pop-Up Walk: White’s Ferry Walk Registration

SUMMARY:Point of Rocks Pop Up Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz for a Point of Rocks Pop Up Walk at 10:00 am on Tuesday August 22nd at the Point of Rocks Boat ramp  parking lot off Commerce St. at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (mile 48.20). Our group will walk up the towpath passing beneath the Route 15 bridge\, the Point of Rocks railroad tunnel\, and train tracks to Lockhouse 28 (mile 48.93). Then we will continue walking up the towpath passing the Catoctin Railroad tunnel (mile 49.99 to mile 50.11) before turning back to the parking lot. Afterwards\, we will head to the Point of Rocks Creamery for ice cream and camaraderie. Round trip walk is almost four miles.  \nCompleted in 1837\, Lockhouse 28 stands as a reminder of the fierce competition between the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in the race to reach the Ohio River Valley. At Point of Rocks the land between the Potomac River and the rocky outcropping becomes precariously narrow. Both companies knew ownership of this strip of land was imperative to winning the race to the Ohio. Adversaries in the courts for four years\, the Canal company won the battle\, but the Maryland General Assembly ruled that the C&O Canal must share the right of way with the railroad as far as Harpers Ferry. The C&O Canal was allowed to build next to the river\, and the B&O Railroad was forced to carve its way through the hillside just above the canal in the form of this tunnel.  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.  \nPoint of Rocks Pop Up Walk

SUMMARY:CANCELED Historic Ag Reserve Properties - August
DESCRIPTION:This event is canceled due to a scheduling conflict for the presenter.  Sorry for any inconvenience. Check back for next month’s presentation. \nJoin Poolesville Seniors on August 17th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us. \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today. \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country’s best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.  \nHistoric Ag Reserve Properties August 2023
