SUMMARY:Pop Up Walk: Lock 29 to Little Catoctin Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz on a Pop-Up walk on March 1st at 10:00 a.m. from Lock 29\, Lander (mile 50.89)\, to the Catoctin Creek Aqueduct.  From there we will continue to Little Catoctin Creek (mile 52.51) where the Park is building a bridge over the creek to connect the towpath where culvert 82 washed out and work is being performed. This is a level walk. Parking at the lock house or at the boat ramp parking lot. Lock 29 is near the Potomac River. Turn left from Route 464 onto Lander Road and follow signs to lock 29. Registration required.  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our “pop-up” walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White’s Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct. \nPop Up Walk: Lock 29 to Little Catoctin Creek

SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on February 15th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country’s best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.   \n \nHistoric Ag Reserve Properties

SUMMARY:Pop Up Walk: Sugarloaf White Rock Overlook
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz on Thursday\, February 8th at 10:00 a.m. at the west parking lot on top of Sugarloaf Mountain.  We will follow the blue trail out to the White Rocks Overlook. There is very nice scenery along the way. The footing will be rocky at times. There will be up and down hills along the walk. A walking stick is suggested. The round-trip hike is five miles. This is an intermediate level hike.  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.  \nPop Up Walk: Sugarloaf White Rock Overlook

SUMMARY:Pop Up Walk: Seneca Quarries
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday\, January 27th at Riley's Lock where we will walk to the Seneca Stone Cutting Mill and then on to the Seneca Quarries. The stone cutting mill was constructed in two sections. The first one in 1837 and the second in 1867. Stones were cut at the mill and loaded onto canal boats for transport to Georgetown. The stones were used in several buildings in Washington\, DC including the Smithsonian Castle. Stones from the quarry were used in building locks for the Potomac Canal and several C&O Canal locks.  \nThere is a lot of overgrowth on the quarry cliffs\, there may be wet/mudding spots along the way and there may be roots/rocks to watch out for. We will walk by the John P. C. Peter Quarry where the stones from this quarry were used to build the Seneca Aqueduct.   \nWe will walk as far as Broad Run and view the Government Quarry. Stones from this quarry were used to build the Great Falls dam. There are no hills\, and the walk is flat. The path will be difficult to follow at times. There is multifloral rose growing along the path. The total length of the hike will be about three miles round trip and should take about two hours.   \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal.
