This will be a 5.7-mile hike starting at the Bucklodge Conservation Park Trailhead on Slidell Road. We will proceed through the upper part of the Ten Mile Creek Conservation Park on the Jewel Weed Way Trail then loop around the Danger Noodle Trail. The trail is packed dirt with fallen leaves and minimal roots and rocks. It has 436 feet of elevation gain. There are 6 rock crossings over small creeks and some (not too bad) muddiness on parts of the trail.  We will also bushwack for about 100 yards to connect our loop. We will maintain a moderate pace and should complete the hike within 2.5 hours.  Boots are recommended. Rain date 4/18.    \nDirections: From Rt. 28 at Lewis Orchard\, take Peach Tree Road east for 1/2 mile.  Turn right onto West Old Baltimore and go 1 mile to the first stop sign.  Turn left onto Slidell Road (but there is no street sign) and go 1 mile.  Trailhead is on the left (big sign\, can’t miss it).  \n  \nKaren Dansby was born and raised in Arlington\, VA. She spent 20+ years in eastern Kentucky\, then retired to Sedona\, AZ. Karen participated in trail maintenance in Sedona\, hiked and participated in Preventive Search and Rescue for almost 10 years at the South and North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  She moved back to Poolesville to be close to family.   \nGwen Haney grew up in rural PA but did most of her hiking while living in Arizona\, in the mountains and canyons of the southwest. She moved to Maryland 17 years ago to be near family and continues to enjoy being outdoors and on trails.   \nWatch for other hikes in and around Montgomery County for Poolesville Seniors.  Once a month Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby will lead/tailgate a hike for Poolesville Seniors.  The hikes will be 4-6 miles and last approximately 2-3 hours.  A description will be given of the monthly hike with hiking recommendations. Trail Hike: Bucklodge Conservation Park to Ten Mile Creek Conservation Park

Packing lunch\, water\, and snacks are advisable.   \nThe Paw Paw Tunnel Trailhead Parking area is located 2 hours from Poolesville at milepost 156.1 on the C&O Canal. If you are interested in carpooling for this trip\, please meet at the parking lot at Our Lady of the Presentation Church (17200 Tom Fox Avenue\, Poolesville) at 8:45 a.m.  \n  \n*What is the Paw Paw Tunnel?  \nThe Paw Paw Tunnel is one of the most significant engineering features on the C&O Canal. To avoid building six miles of canal along the river\, the C&O Canal Company decided to construct a tunnel through a steep topographic ridge now called Tunnel Hill. When work began on the tunnel in 1836\, the builders estimated the project would be complete within two years. The tunnel ultimately required 14 years to complete due to labor issues and violence\, funding shortfalls\, work stoppages\, and the challenges of digging a 3\,118-foot tunnel through the hard\, loose shale. The tunnel opened in October 1850 with rockslides continuing to be a challenge throughout the tunnel's history.  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.\nPop-Up Walk: Paw Paw Tunnel and Tunnel Hill Trail

SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on March 21st @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this bi-monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nRegister on our website now or check back to get more details on this month's event at (insert link to registration) Look for Kenny in July\, September\, and November. \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country's best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University. \nHistoric Ag Reserve Properties

DESCRIPTION:Join the PS! Book Club virtually on March 18th at 7:00 p.m. when we discuss The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods. On a quiet street in Dublin\, a lost bookstore is waiting to be found…  \nWhen a vanishing bookshop casts its spell\, three unsuspecting strangers\, Opaline\, Martha\, and Henry\, will discover that their own stories are every bit as extraordinary as the ones found in the pages of their beloved books. By unlocking the secrets of the shelves\, they find themselves transported to a world of wonder … where nothing is as it seems.  \n448 pages\, Paperback  \nFirst published November 7\, 2023  \nEvie Woods is the author of The Lost Bookshop\, the #1 Wall Street Journal and Amazon Kindle and Sunday Times bestseller\, which has now sold over half a million copies. She is also the author of The Story Collector\, The Heirloom and The Mysterious Bakery On Rue De Paris under her real name\, Evie Gaughan. \nLiving on the West Coast of Ireland\, Evie escapes the inclement weather by writing her stories in a converted attic\, where she dreams of underfloor heating.
