SUMMARY:Frontier Living Presentation by Mark Gochnour
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Gochnour\, a longtime historical reenactor\, on April 18th at 7:00 p.m.\, for a multi-faceted look at pioneer living. Come and see Mark's 18th Century handsewn clothing\, furs\, traps and other gear along with his stories and information about life on the frontier. Don't miss this opportunity to get a taste of history.  \nOur colonial ancestors learned\, evolved and adapted. It was not an idyllic life and there are many myths and sad stories along the way.  These pioneers were intrepid and kept exploring even with dangers that we may have forgotten.  \nLocation: Speer Hall at Poolesville Presbyterian Church\, 17800 Elgin Rd. (109)       \n________________________________________________ \nMark was a children's librarian and then "Senior Librarian" managing the Poolesville Library from 1991 to 2010. have done historical reenacting for nearly 50 years. He is a Bethesda-Chevy Chase Izaak Walton League of America member right down the road in Poolesville. He worked at Homestead Farm as a school group tour guide in the fall for almost 20 years. He hunts with flintlock firearms\, in 18th Century clothing. He has written two articles about muzzleloading and hunting for two magazines. He has been written about in newspapers.  \nHe researched and printed a hymnbook for reenactors and is a lay preacher at one local event in the spring.   \nHe hand sews some of his clothes and makes some of his other gear.  \nMark speaks about life on the frontier for groups – scouts\, homeschooling groups\, and elementary school classes. He tells stories\, shares information He can bring and discuss furs\, traps\, and other gear. He can demonstrate how to start a fire with flint and steel\, i.e. without matches.  Usually\, his programs last about 45 minutes before the questions.  \nMark encourages people to record their elderly family members talking about life when they were little. Once these people have passed\, their life stories\, what they have experienced and seen and learned about their elderly family members who were around when they were younger is lost unless someone has captured it. Frontier Living Presentation by Mark Gochnour

SUMMARY:Trail Hike: Bucklodge Conservation Park to Ten Mile Creek Conservation Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby on Thursday April 11th at 9:30 a.m. for a trail hike in the Barnesville area. This will be a 5.7-mile hike starting at the Bucklodge Conservation Park Trailhead on Slidell Road. We will proceed through the upper part of the Ten Mile Creek Conservation Park on the Jewel Weed Way Trail then loop around the Danger Noodle Trail. The trail is packed dirt with fallen leaves and minimal roots and rocks. It has 436 feet of elevation gain. There are 6 rock crossings over small creeks and some (not too bad) muddiness on parts of the trail.  We will also bushwack for about 100 yards to connect our loop. We will maintain a moderate pace and should complete the hike within 2.5 hours.  Boots are recommended. Rain date 4/18.    \nDirections: From Rt. 28 at Lewis Orchard\, take Peach Tree Road east for 1/2 mile.  Turn right onto West Old Baltimore and go 1 mile to the first stop sign.  Turn left onto Slidell Road (but there is no street sign) and go 1 mile.  Trailhead is on the left (big sign\, can’t miss it).  \n  \nKaren Dansby was born and raised in Arlington\, VA. She spent 20+ years in eastern Kentucky\, then retired to Sedona\, AZ. Karen participated in trail maintenance in Sedona\, hiked and participated in Preventive Search and Rescue for almost 10 years at the South and North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  She moved back to Poolesville to be close to family.   \nGwen Haney grew up in rural PA but did most of her hiking while living in Arizona\, in the mountains and canyons of the southwest. She moved to Maryland 17 years ago to be near family and continues to enjoy being outdoors and on trails.   \nWatch for other hikes in and around Montgomery County for Poolesville Seniors.  Once a month Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby will lead/tailgate a hike for Poolesville Seniors.  The hikes will be 4-6 miles and last approximately 2-3 hours.  A description will be given of the monthly hike with hiking recommendations. Trail Hike: Bucklodge Conservation Park to Ten Mile Creek Conservation Park

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Walk: Paw Paw Tunnel to Lock 62
DESCRIPTION:This event has been rescheduled to April 4th. \nJoin Jon Wolz on April 4th at 11:00 a.m. for a hike through the Paw Paw tunnel*\, across the Potomac River from Paw Paw WV. We will meet at the Paw Paw Tunnel Trailhead parking area (Oldtown Road SE at the Paw Paw Campground)\, and we will walk through the tunnel (mile 155.78 to mile 155.20) to lock 66 (mile 154.70). We can continue to further locks–64 2/3 (mile 154.60) and 63 1/3 (mile 154.48) and lock 62 (mile 154.16) and return up the towpath going through the tunnel once again. After exiting the tunnel\, we will return to our starting point/parking area. This walk should be a little over 3 miles. A flashlight or headlamp may be helpful in the middle of the tunnel. Packing lunch\, water\, and snacks are advisable.   \nThe Paw Paw Tunnel Trailhead Parking area is located 2 hours from Poolesville at milepost 156.1 on the C&O Canal. If you are interested in carpooling for this trip\, please meet at the parking lot at Our Lady of the Presentation Church (17200 Tom Fox Avenue\, Poolesville) at 8:45 a.m.  \n  \n*What is the Paw Paw Tunnel?  \nThe Paw Paw Tunnel is one of the most significant engineering features on the C&O Canal. To avoid building six miles of canal along the river\, the C&O Canal Company decided to construct a tunnel through a steep topographic ridge now called Tunnel Hill. When work began on the tunnel in 1836\, the builders estimated the project would be complete within two years. The tunnel ultimately required 14 years to complete due to labor issues and violence\, funding shortfalls\, work stoppages\, and the challenges of digging a 3\,118-foot tunnel through the hard\, loose shale. The tunnel opened in October 1850 with rockslides continuing to be a challenge throughout the tunnel's history.  \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.\nPop-Up Walk: Paw Paw Tunnel and Tunnel Hill Trail
