SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on July 18th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this bi-monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nRegister on our website now for this event to receive by email the zoom link for this virtual event.  Look for Kenny in 2024 in July\, September\, and November.  \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country’s best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.  Historic Ag Reserve Properties

SUMMARY:Trail Hike: Hamilton Trail\, Black Hills Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Karen Dansby and Gwen Haney on Thursday\, July 18th at 9:00 a.m. at Black Hills Regional Park\, lot #2. The parking lot is on the left off Lake Ridge Drive (about 1.6 miles from the front entrance). Rain date will be July 25th. We will cross the road and hike Hamilton Trail to Cabin Branch Trail\, loop back to Hamilton Trail which runs into Hard Rock Trail and ending on Black Hill Trail to the parking lot.  There are restrooms near parking lot #2. The trail is 5.5 miles and if we maintain a moderate pace\, it should take 2 1/2 hours.  The trail is packed-dirt\, tree roots and rocks.  Please arrive at the parking lot 10 minutes before our scheduled start time of 9 am.  Bring water and a snack\, if you like. \nDirections: Follow signs to go east on West Old Baltimore Road. In 0.9 miles turn right to go south on Lake Ridge Drive\, which is the entrance for the park.  Lot #2 is about 1.6 miles from the entrance on the left.  \nKaren Dansby was born and raised in Arlington\, VA. She spent 20+ years in eastern Kentucky\, then retired to Sedona\, AZ. Karen participated in trail maintenance in Sedona\, hiked and participated in Preventive Search and Rescue for almost 10 years at the South and North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  She moved back to Poolesville to be close to family.   \nGwen Haney grew up in rural PA but did most of her hiking while living in Arizona\, in the mountains and canyons of the southwest. She moved to Maryland 17 years ago to be near family and continues to enjoy being outdoors and on trails.   \nWatch for other hikes in and around Montgomery County for Poolesville Seniors.  Once a month Gwen Haney and Karen Dansby will lead/tailgate a hike for Poolesville Seniors.  The hikes will be 4-6 miles and last approximately 2-3 hours.  A description will be given of the monthly hike with hiking recommendations.  \n  \nTrail Hike:  Hamilton Trail\, Black Hills Regional Park\, lot #2

SUMMARY:Battle of Monocacy 160th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Join Brad Stone on Tuesday July 9th at 7:00 pm to mark the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Monocacy fought in Frederick\, MD. It was one of the most important\, yet least known battles of the Civil War. On that day\, a small Union force hastily cobbled together by Union General Lew Wallace – and outnumbered nearly three-to-one – miraculously held back the invading Confederate army headed toward Washington\, D.C. for an entire day – just enough time for the Union to reinforce the fortifications of the capital. Join popular historian\, Brad Stone for another of his enjoyable presentations about the history of our nation.  \nLocation: Poolesville Presbyterian Church Sanctuary\, 17800 Elgin Rd. (109)  \nHelp us show area youngsters that Seniors care!  Shop the grocery sales and BOGOs and bring your items to any Poolesville Seniors event this Summer. We will have a collection box or bin labeled WUMCO SUMMER FOOD FOR KIDS at future events until schools reopen at the end of August. Read about this special program on our blog. \nBrad Stone is a volunteer at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick\, MD and aboard the USS Constellation in Baltimore Harbor. Over the past few years\, he has developed presentations on an assortment of Civil War-related topics. His talks have been given at a wide variety of venues including the Gettysburg Heritage Center\, the Antietam Battlefield National Park and the U.S. Navy Museum at the Navy Yard in Washington\, DC.  A couple of his talks have also been televised nationally on C-SPAN3 American History TV. The Battle of Monocacy 160th Anniversary: A Presentation by Brad Stone
