SUMMARY:Pop-Up Bike Ride: Whites Ferry to Edwards Ferry and Return
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz on Wednesday August 7 at 10:00 am for a Pop-Up Bike Ride from Whites Ferry to Edwards Ferry and return trip.  This is a 9 ½ mile ride round trip. Afterwards\, for those who are interested\, we can eat lunch at White's Ferry Grill.   \n   \nJon Wolz\, our local expert on the C&O Canal and leader of our "pop-up" walks\, has a long history with the canal. As a Montgomery Blair High School sophomore and Eagle Scout\, he had already hiked the entire canal. In 1970\, Jon was the Boy Scout chosen to testify before a Senate subcommittee on behalf of the bill to protect the C&O Canal as a National Historical Park. Maryland Congressmen Gilbert Gude and J. Glenn Beall sponsored the bill.  \nSince 2015 Jon has volunteered as a level walker with the C&O Canal Association (COCA). His two levels encompass the area from White's Ferry to Monocacy Aqueduct.  \nPop-Up Bike Ride: White's Ferry to Edward's Ferry

SUMMARY:Walk Across Potomac at Historic White’s Ford
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Wolz and the American Legion Post 247 on Saturday August 3rd at 9:00 a.m. for a walk across the Potomac River at White’s Ford and back in the footsteps of Civil War soldiers.   \nParticipants will meet at the “saloon” at the Calleva Farm on Martinsburg Rd.at 9:00 am to hear a talk by Jon Wolz about the ford and Civil War crossings before venturing out. We will walk across a field and then down a hill to the C&O Canal and towpath. We will walk about a quarter mile down the towpath to the ford. A walking stick will be useful when crossing the river. Crossing to Mason Island is not difficult. Crossing from the tip of Mason Island to the Virginia shore is more challenging. There are slippery rocks in the river that should be avoided.  \n The water may come up to mid-thigh on adults. Wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. A dry set of socks and shoes may be more comfortable.  Feel free to wear a lifejacket for added security and use a walking stick. \nThe current may knock young children down. But children ten and up who are strong swimmers may participate if they are accompanied by an adult at all times. Lifejackets for children are strongly suggested. Dogs should be left at home. \nAfter we come back to the Maryland shore\, we will walk back up the towpath to the path across the canal and back up the hill to the field. We will cross the field back to the saloon. Bring your lunch or a snack and socialize after the walk. This walk depends on the weather and water level\, so check in the day before.  \nLocation: Calleva Farm “Saloon”\, 19120 Martinsburg Rd.\, Dickerson\, MD   \nTitle:

SUMMARY:Historic Ag Reserve Properties with Kenny Sholes
DESCRIPTION:Join Poolesville Seniors on July 18th @7pm for the next Historic Ag Reserve Properties presentation with local historian Kenny Sholes. The lands around us have played an important part in American history over the last few centuries. The fields we pass through each day have spurred economic development\, been the scene of battles\, provided escape from the pace of daily life\, and brought families together at the dinner table. Dotting this landscape is an array of impressive historic homes – standing as visual reminders of those who came before us.   \nIn this bi-monthly series\, Kenny introduces some of the incredible historic homes in the Agricultural Reserve\, using the history of the homes to better understand the people whose land we have inherited and how their dreams\, goals\, and struggles were not all that different from ours today.   \nRegister on our website now for this event to receive by email the zoom link for this virtual event.  Look for Kenny in 2024 in July\, September\, and November.  \nKenny Sholes was born and raised in Poolesville\, in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. After graduating from West Point in 2006\, Kenny served as a US Army officer for five years\, to include two deployments to Iraq. Kenny is the creator of Foundry Admissions Strategies\, a small consultancy focused on helping high school students in rural America gain admission to our country’s best colleges. Now living in Poolesville with his wife and two children\, Kenny is busy exploring Agricultural Reserve history and serves as a board member for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance. Kenny has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the US Military Academy at West Point\, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.  Historic Ag Reserve Properties
